NSBE South Jersey Professionals

Our Mission

Our mission at NSBE – SJP is “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers, who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.” The chapter has retooled and restructured such that we can meet some of the vast needs of South Jersey in the various Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas. Among our primary initiatives are the development of various Pre-College Initiatives (PCI) and the establishment of Jr. NSBE chapters throughout the South Jersey area that set the stage for programs such as; Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK), TRY-MATH-A-LON (TMAL), and the High School Team Engineering Design Competition. NSBE – SJP has successfully developed an "Air Traffic Control Airway Science and Engineering Program (ATCASEP)." Annually, our chapter proudly awards scholarships to worthy South Jersey High School students who have demonstrated academic excellence in the area(s) of STEM.

Sincerely yours,
G Kemet Uhuru
NSBE-SJP President

History

When Kevin Wideman, Kemet Uhuru, Letitia Peters and Sabra Townsend decided to attend a NSBE picnic given by the Greater Philadelphia Alumni Extension (AE) chapter in the summer of 1989, they never envisioned that it would lead to an energetic and viable chapter just a few miles down the road. But that is just what happened.

After attending that outing, they were all very interested in becoming members of NSBE. They decided to start a chapter in the South Jersey area. The NSBE-AE South Jersey chapter was officially chartered in the fall of 1989 by a group of energetic engineers and scientists at the FAA Technical Center in the Atlantic City, NJ area.
